New York Finishes $2.7 Million Project to Prevent Flooding on West Bay Road in Cayuga County

The project included the installation of a 1.8 mile long storm water collection system and bioretention basins for rainwater.

A $2.7 million project to mitigate flooding along West Bay Road in the town of Sterling, Cayuga County, New York, has been completed. 

According to the state Department of Transportation, the project included the installation of a 1.8 mile long storm water collection system and bioretention basins for rainwater, reported The Auburn Citizen.

According to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office press release, the project aimed to rebuild the existing storm drainage system on West Bay Road. The road consisted mainly of roadside ditches which were unable to adequately transport runoff during high water events.

The project is part of the state's Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI), which is a response to a pattern of flooding along the shorelines of Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River. Five REDI Regional Planning Committees, composed of representatives from eight counties were established to identify local priorities, at-risk infrastructure and other assets, and public safety concerns, according to REDI.   

"Through (Gov. Andrew Cuomo's) Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative, the storm water collection system along West Bay Road was replaced and upgraded, mitigating future flooding and road closures, and ensuring the safe passage of residents," Sterling Supervisor Scott Crawford said, reported The Auburn Citizen.

Other projects planned in Cayuga County include upgrades at Fair Haven Beach State Park and West Barrier Bar Park. Another improvement that is ongoing is for the Sterling Nature Center. 

The state Department of Transportation also announced that a $500,000 Swing Bridge project commenced in Monroe County. 

An open mechanical pit will be raised and the mechanical systems that operate the bridge will be retrofitted, according to The Auburn Citizen. The goal is to ensure the systems can be functional despite flooding.
